Prompt: Boats

I love the feeling I get when I’m on a boat. I most frequent water taxis rather than ferries. The constant up down, the sun is usually glinting off the water through my sunglasses and into my eyes but I don’t stop staring. The feeling I get in my stomach when we drop from a big wave, adrenaline washing over, wanting it again. I listen to the waves crashing and watch the white water turning from our wake. I’m headed somewhere, and the boat is what’s taking me there.

On The Way There

the boat ride
up, down, up, down
that feeling in your stomach
when you feel like falling

sunglasses on
the sun gleaming off the water
makes it shiny
mesmerizing

an 's' shape takes us
into the bay
the land and water
becoming all the more familiar

we get closer
more and more excited
the boat slows
and we know its mere minutes

nothing ever really changes
but maybe that's the best part

Summer Camp

Summer Camp

I step off the boat onto the wobbly lower dock. I take my sunglasses off my head and put them over my eyes so the glare from the sun off the water is slightly bearable. I walk up the ramp, steep because of the low tide. It’s windy down here. I make note of things, the house on the point, the red railings, Snake Island, the red row boats and canoes. Everything is quiet for a moment as I remember. Then reality snaps back as I hear the kids behind me calling out my name, but that doesn’t matter. I’m home again for the first time since last summer.
